Audra and Parrish walked back to the bus stop. They sat for a while on the same bench, silently. They simply watched traffic, each allowing the other to sort out how exhausted they were by doing the very little they'd done. It was a little thing they'd done, but that little, for that particular moment, had been the right bit.

After a while, Parrish turned to look at Audra. He studied the features of her face, taking his time with each one. Then he stood. “It's too cold to be outside.”

Audra stood as well, shouldering her backpack. “Yeah, I need to get home.”

Parrish leaned over, picked up her gloves, and handed them to her.

“Thanks,” she said, jamming them in her coat pockets.

Parrish cleared his throat. “Would you have dinner with me?”

Audra didn't answer. She just looked at him, surprised—something different, even quieting in his voice.

Parrish smiled. “I know this terrific little Chinese place.”
